Above: One of the papers in the back has a postage franking mark of 1857. This sample is made from silks, taffeta and chintz.  The hexagons measure 1/2" each side.

I created the piece above in the 1960's , when I was about 12 years old.  The cotton fabrics are so obviously vintage.   Note the reason NOT to sew your hexagons together with white thread!  The hexagons measure 6/10ths of an inch each side.

I created the video clip above to demonstrate how to create hexagon patchwork.  The basic method has not changed.  See samples on this page.

The cotton/calico piece below was purchased in Portobello Road in the late 1980's.  I do not know how old it is but have seen similar samples dating back to the 1800's.  The hexagons measure 7/10ths of an inch each side.  Note how the fabric has deteriorated.

December 2010 -  Re: my sister website www.waistcoatsuniqe.com

November 2010,  I was contacted  by VOGUE magazine (UK) to create a small floral, chintz  fabric waistcoat  for a photoshoot.  I totally enjoyed the creative process of working with patchwork again .  It was fantastic to re-visit  vintage fabrics carefully hidden in boxes.  All sorts of memories came flooding back as I chose fabric combinations to create Waistcoat  134.   I could not wait to start sewing and worked almost without a break until the waistcoat was complete.   The result worked perfectly.   See slide show below.

Fast Track Start - Thifty Method:

Create hexagons using 80 or 90gsm paper

important note:  technology does not guarantee the accuracy or size of hexagons after printing from this page, suggest use isometric paper or create hexagon using compass and protractor

or purchase hexagons from this website.

Re-cycling garment above.   Cut seams, remove selvedge edges, work to the grain of the fabric - tear into strips, using hexagon as a guide, cut rectangles. Allow about 1cm seam allowance all around.

Tack paper hexagon to paper as shown above then sew hexagons together.

see detailed patchwork demonstration video clips

I would like to share hexagonal patchwork my Mother created out of recycled cotton/polyester fabrics.  Some date back 40 years - each rosette is unique - its been washed countless times. Its cherished and enjoyed.

The hexagons are 1.25" (34mm)
